Can an artist escape the constrains of a patriarchal culture and produce different sort of images of female bodies?


The work reflects on pornographic stereographs- a popular photographic process that was used in the late 19th and early 20th century to achieve a 3D dimensional effect adding an illusion of depth to a 2D image. The artist works with Polaroids because of the medium’s traditional ties to female identity through use in the domestic sphere, and family photo albums. As part of her investigation into the possibilities and theories of the gaze, S creates imagery in an attempt to reverse the male gaze and respond to other ways of seeing.
